We welcome you to our Website featuring our published book, which was successfully launched in November 2012.
The Thristle Clockmakers of Somerset 1765 - 1899
including James Cole of Stowey, John Millard of Stogursey
and the Dial Makers Pyke of Bridgwater and Cox of Taunton.
The Thristle Clockmakers of Somerset 1765 - 1899 etc. is a full colour illustrated history of this rural clockmaking family, spanning four generations, who lived and worked in a small corner of West Somerset.
The appeal of the book is widened by the inclusion of previously unpublished research relating to the contemporary clockmaker James Cole of Nether Stowey. James, who was known locally as 'Conjuror Cole', was one of Somerset's eminent clockmakers and the father of the celebrated London clockmakers Thomas and James Ferguson Cole.
Further interest is provided by a chapter devoted to the yeoman farmer and clockmaker John Millard of Stogursey, whose family were blacksmiths in the village for 200 years.
The authors have sought to give prominence to the hitherto little researched activities of the dial makers Thomas Pyke of Bridgwater and the Cox family of Taunton. Two chapters are dedicated to these West Country founders, who rose to local significance during the period of the Industrial Revolution.
Much of the information used for this book has been gathered from archive material held in many centres throughout the country. The authors have also been privileged to view privately held archive material which has enhanced the quality of our research.
